It’s really easy to get confused when you’re starting to build a website. When I first started it seemed like every person I talked to had a different opinion on what was best or the fastest way to do it.

Turns out some of them were:

-Really expensive
-Didn’t deliver increased website traffic
-Were too hard to learn
-Just another person’s “Get Rich Quick” scheme

None of those were fun for me.  I know they wouldn’t be fun for you, either. That’s why I put together 4 of my favorite website tips to help you navigate the sea of uncertainty.

Website Tip #1: Start Cheap

A lot of people “in the know” will disagree with this. They’ll say if you’re gonna do it at all, do it right the first time. How many of them do you think did it right the first time?

We’re all guaranteed a few bumps and bruises along the way, so why not endure them at the lowest cost possible — FREE.

It’s true, you probably will upgrade at some point, but you’ll have tested out some ideas and found what seems to work for you.  Then, when you do decide to invest some money in your online pursuits, your return on investment may be higher.

Website Tip #2: Daily Tracking

Use a website checklist.  If you don’t have one, get one. It will keep you on track daily, weekly, monthly — whatever it takes.

It’s the times when I’m not following a checklist or to-do list that I often fall behind on projects and deadlines that I’ve set for myself.

Website Tip #3: Video

If you’re comfortable on camera, then use it to your advantage. There’s an ongoing debate as to whether copy (written word) or video sales convert visitors into customers better.

I’m still a big fan of using both, as I’ve seen some great sales pages and squeeze pages that would not have had the same impact without the video.

However, if you’re a nervous wreck and don’t communicate well in the spotlight, you might try something like Camtasia that allows you to record your voice while you take a video of your computer screen.

The second option is great for educational videos.

Website Tip #4: Eliminate Distractions

Of course, this is more easily said than done. Distractions come in all forms, good and bad, large and small. What usually gets me is being introduced to “the newest toy” in the internet marketing world. There’s always a new product launch, new service being offered, and always more to learn. Normally, what I’ll do is take note of the distraction and put it at the bottom of my “learning phase” list. That way, I can stay focused on my “doing phase” and get to the new stuff when I switch gears.
