After Perry Marshall posted an email from Glenn Livingston detailing a massive drop on several affiliate marketer’s landing pages’ quality scores, thousands of affiliates started gearing up for battle; some said it was unfair, some praised Google’s decision, but the most important thing is: how can you avoid this new Google slap?

First, let’s get things clear: it’s not every affiliate page that’s being hunted. Google is finally focusing on “review” pages, that have nothing but very limited content and an affiliate link to a sales page. Those pages, which have been used for quite sometime now, are the main strategy for several marketers, because they require little work, are easy to replicate, and they’re very cheap.

According to Dr. Glenn Livingston:

“When we analyzed which pages survived, and we take it in combination with other information, it seems pretty clear they’ve added code which screens for affiliate links on the landing pages.”

Why would Google invest time and energy into this matter?

They’re always worried about the quality of the ads that are run on AdWords. Of course, they want advertisers’ money, but they will not allow searchers to be misled by compelling ads that fail to deliver on their promises.

As Perry wisely stated:

“Many times the affiliates don’t even own the product and it’s a big pump and dump. Savvy web surfers quickly recognize these sites and don’t trust their advice.”

Marketers that have been hit by the slap and those looking to prevent it are now reevaluating their business models, and the first step is to move forward and create a stronger relationship with your customers. And yes, even though affiliates are not actually selling anything, people that have bought through their links are their customers and when treated properly, will come back for more.

The first step is to get rid of all affiliate links on landing pages; but that is easier said than done.

Building a stronger sales funnel is an art, and some of the marketers hit by the affiliate slap will have to get back to the basics.
